The Saffron Trail weaves together communities, connecting the land and the water we share.

The Saffron Trail is a long-distance route through north Essex, connecting a series of landscapes shaped by water, springs, brooks, rivers, and wetlands.

We are developing the trail as a living blue-green corridor, where ecological enhancement, community engagement, and cultural activity come together to reconnect people with the natural environment.

Through a programme of site-based interventions, learning, and stewardship, the trail becomes more than a route, it becomes a shared space for understanding and caring for the landscapes it passes through.

Our Project

Blue Steps Along the Saffron Trail is a research and development project exploring how movement, water, and culture can support more connected, equitable, and resilient places.

This work is about listening first to the land, to water systems, and to the people who live alongside them. By building momentum through shared experiences and collective storytelling, Blue Steps is laying the foundations for a future feasibility report, ecological surveys, and potential public commissions that respond to place, access, and environmental need and enhancements.

Rather than seeing the water bodies as isolated sites, the project brings them together as a connected corridor, where water, ecology, and people are part of the same system.

By improving key locations along the trail and supporting ongoing community activity, we are building a continuous relationship between people and place.

Over time, this work aims to support the Saffron Trail being understood and valued as a shared cultural asset for Essex, shaped by ecology, care, and the communities it connects.

Blue Steps Along the Saffron Trail is supported by Blue Spaces funding from Essex and Suffolk Water.

Meet Our Team

Behind everything we do is a team of people who truly care. We bring our full selves to the table, open-minded, collaborative, and ready to make something great.

As a team our work focuses on three core areas:

Ecological Enhancement
Improving habitats and biodiversity at key sites along the trail, including springs, brooks, and rivers.

Community Engagement
Working with local groups, schools, and volunteers to increase access to and understanding of the landscape.

Learning & Stewardship
Developing initiatives to support ongoing care and monitoring of blue spaces.

The Saffron Trail can become a cultural treasure that weaves together communities, connecting the land and the water we share.
