Saffron Trail
Walking Logs
From February to March 2026, we walked 71-mile-long Saffron Trail starting from the picturesque, medieval town of Saffron Waldon and ending in bustling, diverse Southend-on-Sea.
We moved slowly and intentionally, besides water, through forest and farmland, across fields, and in and out of villages, small towns and cities. Along the way, we remapped parts of the trail, forged connections, explored cultural spaces, encountered wildlife, logged the terrain and ecology. We searched, we found, we foraged and conversed.
The walking logs, each one loosely based on a specific provocation, document each stretch of our journey. Drafted by the projects’ artist researcher, Saira Niazi, the logs recount observations, stories, and imaginings and explore various themes including history, heritage, climate justice, access, ecology, land, water and nature connection.
